Polish MEP faces calls for disciplinary charges after 'human garbage' claim

A controversial Polish MEP is facing calls for him to be disciplined for alleged "shameful" remarks about migrants. It comes after non attached member Janusz Korwin-Mikke (pictured) was accused of likening the migrants currently flooding into Europe from war-torn Syria to "human garbage".

The alleged comments have caused a storm of protest with an online petition calling on Parliament's president Martin Schulz to impose sanctions on the deputy.

The incident happened  in Strasbourg on September 9 when Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker spoke in the European Parliament as part of its "State of the Union", in particular on refugees and how the EU should respond.

MEPs made comments following his speech, including Korwin-Mikke, who apparently commented: "Jest to absurdalna polityka, powodujaca zalew Europy śmieciem ludzkim". This translates as: "This is an absurd policy that causes flooding Europe with human garbage."

Schulz is now being asked to discipline the member under the asembly's Rules of Procedure which seek to regulate the behavior of members "on the conditions laid down in the basic texts of the European Union values ​​and principles."

One Socialist member said: "This outburst was shameful and is contrary in particular to the UN Convention on Human Rights and the principle of human dignity. Schulz has no option but to impose a penalty.

"I believe that such inhumane comments are misplaced in a representative body of the EU and must be sanctioned."

Korwin-Mikke is a conservative liberal Polish political commentator, the creator of a Polish liberal political party Coalition for the Renewal of the Republic - Freedom and Hope and Member of the European Parliament.

It is not the first time the MEP has grabbed media attention with comments in Parliament.

In the past Korwin-Mikke, who is fiercly pro-Vladimir Putin, has decried the EU as a "communist project" and reportedly said the European Commission building would be better used if it was turned into a brothel.

In the past Korwin-Mikke, who has been an MEP since July 2014, has also reportedly used the n-word in parliament, said women had evolved to be less intelligent than men, and socialists were more stupid than monkeys.

In July, he stunned fellow members in parliament when he rose to his feet during a debate on transport and appeared to give a Nazi salute.

The Polish foreign ministry was forced to apologise for the outburst. Polish Foreign Minister Grzegorz Schetyna said in televised statement: "We all are ashamed of such behaviour and we apologize to Europe, the European parliament, sorry to the voters."
