20150715PHT82105_originalMEPs vote next week on the National Emission Ceilings (NEC) Directive. Anna Lisa Boni, secretary general of EUROCITIES, the network of major European cities, explains why this vote is so crucial for air quality in cities: “We urge MEPs to vote for binding 2025 reduction targets on particulate matter, nitrogen oxides and ammonia. It is crucial that we address all pollutants, including ammonia emissions from agriculture: they contribute significantly to poor air quality in cities. Air pollution is the most important environmental health problem in the EU, and is costing our economies and our health. This problem is concentrated in cities, where three quarters of our population lives.”
