MEPs to hear Europol and EU counter-terrorism chiefs ahead of ministers' meeting

european_parliament_001Civil liberties MEPs will discuss the Paris terrorist attacks and subsequent police operations, ahead of Friday's Justice and Home Affairs Council, at a special meeting on Thursday (19 November) morning. Europol Director Rob Wainwright, the EU Counter-Terrorism Coordinator, Gilles De Kerchove (tbc), and representatives of the Council Presidency and the Commission will take part.

The debate, addressing current and envisaged anti-terror measures, will take place from 9h50 to 10h50. MEPs are likely to discuss the Passenger Name Record data (EU PNR) proposal, currently being negotiated by European legislators in "trialogues" (three-way talks between Parliament, Council and Commission), stepping up information-sharing among member states and between them and Europol, strengthening controls at the EU's external borders, tackling terrorist financing, and fighting firearms trafficking.
The debate in the committee will be webstreamed on EP Live and on EbS.Parliament will also debate and vote on a civil liberties committee report on the prevention of radicalization and recruitment of European citizens by terrorist organizations at its 23-26 November session in Strasbourg.
