  • First, the Commission has worked to ensure a wider access to online content and services for Europeans. We have made a series of concrete proposals to boost e-commerce and modernize EU copyright rules.
  • Second, we have designed the right framework for our digital economy to develop, with, for example, new telecoms rules which encourage investment in first-class connectivity networks. We have also more recently proposed to strengthen the confidentiality of communications for Europeans.
  • Finally, we came with a series of initiatives to digitize European industry, develop e-government and digital skills.

We now rely on the European Parliament and member states to move forward swiftly with these various actions.

Our most recent initiatives were presented last week: we proposed updated legislation to ensure stronger privacy in electronic communications as well as policy and legal solutions to unleash the EU's data economy.

More good news from the digital skills side: the attendance figures of EU Code Week 2016 were published on Monday (16 January), showing that almost one million people coded in one of the 23,000 events organized in more than 50 countries around the world. Given the positive feedback, the EU Code Week will be organized this year for the fifth time in a row. It will extend over two weeks from 7-22 October, inviting even more young programming enthusiasts to participate.

This week we additionally started an important review: the Commission seeks views on the performance of the European Union Agency for Network and Information Security (ENISA) to address better the main security concerns of the digital community.

And last but not least, the Commission launched on Tuesday (17 January) a film contest to promote Europe’s unique diversity of films, TV programmes and video games as part of the recent 25th anniversary of the MEDIA Programme. Up to 10 participants who can answer correctly 25 questions related to 25 films and other audiovisual works that are funded by the EU's support programme for the European audiovisual sector, will have the chance to win a trip to the 2017 Cannes Film Festival.
