belgium-europe-canada-trade"Canada knows that an effective European voice on the global stage isn’t just preferable – it’s essential," Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau (pictured) told MEPs in the Strasbourg chamber on Thursday (16 February). Trudeau, the first Canadian Prime Minister to address the European Parliament, highlighted the historic partnership between the EU and Canada.

"The European Union is a truly remarkable achievement, and an unprecedented model for peaceful cooperation. Canada knows that an effective European voice on the global stage isn’t just preferable – it’s essential," said Trudeau. "The whole world benefits from a strong EU", he added.

In his speech, Trudeau highlighted the benefits of the EU-Canada Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), approved by Parliament on Wednesday 15 February. "With CETA, together we have built something. Something important. Especially at this moment, on your continent and mine. Now we need to make it work, for your people and ours. The best is yet to come".
