#Kenya - Rule of law and peaceful electoral process must prevail

Following the unprecedented decision for Africa of the Kenyan Supreme Court to annul the outcome of the last presidential election, the leader of the S&D Group, Gianni Pittella, with S&D Group members Tanja Fajon and Julie Ward, who took part in the European Parliament election observation mission, stated:
“Kenya is a crucial country not only for Eastern Africa but for the whole continent. The unprecedented decision of the Supreme Court should not jeopardize the hard-won democratic stability, achieved after the 2007 troubles, , with the strengthened 2010 constitution. Therefore, we call on all parties involved, especially the two main candidates – Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga – to stick to the rule of law and democratic procedures in order to guarantee a peaceful and regular electoral process.
“We strongly encourage all Kenyan citizens to abstain from any form of violence or intimidation that could destabilize the democratic institutions. The international community and in particular the European institutions will keep a close eye on the evolving situation in Kenya".
