Commenting on the murder of the Bulgarian reporter Victoria Marinova (pictured), European Green Party co-chairs Monica Frassoni and Reinhard Bütikofer said: “We are deeply shocked and saddened to learn of the terrible murder of the Bulgarian journalist Victoria Marinova, who had been reporting on an investigation into alleged corruption involving EU funds.

“She is the third journalist to have been killed in the EU in only a year, following the murders of Maltese journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia in October 2017, and Slovak reporter Ján Kuciak, who was killed in February this year.

“All three journalists had been risking their lives to expose deeply-rooted corruption at the highest levels.

“The perpetrators of this tremendous crime must be brought to justice.  The Bulgarian authorities must also show they are serious about protecting journalists who are the cornerstone of a functioning democracy and call for an immediate, independent inquiry.

“As Greens, we commend the fearlessness and single-mindedness of all investigative journalists uncovering corruption in Europe and will continue to support and work with the international organisations that protect their needs.”
