The European Commission has approved under EU state aid rules the prolongation of a scheme supporting the maritime transport sector in the Netherlands. Under the scheme, companies employing seafarers on board wind-propelled commercial cruising vessels can benefit from a reduction in income taxes and social security contributions. The Netherlands has also agreed to extend the benefits of the scheme to all vessels flying the flag of any EU or European Economic Area (EEA) member state.

This is in line with the Commission's interpretation of the Guidelines on State aid to maritime transport. The Commission concluded that the scheme, which will run until the end of 2022, is in line with these Guidelines because it will contribute to the competitiveness of the EU maritime transport sector, while preserving employment and ensuring a level playing field.

More information will be available on the Commission's competition website, in the public case register under the case number SA.46727.
