The Council prepared the special meeting of the European Council for 20 February. EU leaders will be called upon to agree on the EU's multiannual financial framework for the 2021‑2027 period.
Ahead of the summit, President Charles Michel had individual talks with all 27 leaders of the member states on the EU's next long-term budget. On the basis of these consultations, President Michel presented, on 14 February, a proposal on the overall size of the budget and how it is allocated.

Ministers exchanged views on the proposal presented by President Michel.

The time has come to take decisions on the shape of the EU's future budget. These decisions will set the course for the funding of EU priorities in the coming years. They will have an important impact on all our citizens and regions across the Union. It will now be for the EU leaders to settle this important matter.
