21 winners of the #EuropeanHeritageAwards and #EuropaNostra Awards announced
On 7 May, the European Commission and Europa Nostra, the leading European heritage network, announced the winners of this year's European Heritage Awards/Europa Nostra Awards, funded by the EU's Creative Europe programme.
The 21 laureates from 15 countries have been recognized for their accomplishments in heritage conservation, research, dedicated service, and education, training and awareness-raising. Promoting our European Way of Life Vice President Margaritis Schinas, said: “European cultural heritage is our common good. It is priceless but can only thrive on commitment, support, creativity and talent. And precisely for this reason, the winners of the European Heritage Awards/Europa Nostra Awards deserve this special prize today.”
Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth Commissioner Mariya Gabriel said: “The COVID-19 crisis has made clear just how necessary culture and cultural heritage are to people and communities across Europe. At a moment where hundreds of millions of Europeans remain physically separated, our cultural heritage continues to bring people together. This year's winners of the European Heritage Awards/Europa Nostra Awards are inspiring and powerful examples which truly contribute to a closer, more united and more resilient Europe.”
The European Heritage Awards/Europa Nostra Awards are awarded every year to up to 30 outstanding heritage achievements from all parts of Europe. Up to four of the winners are then selected for the Grand Prix, receiving a monetary prize of €10,000 each and one for the Public Choice Award. In times of confinement and physical distancing, the European Commission and Europa Nostra hope to inspire a particularly large number of people to discover this year's award-winning achievements.
That is why everyone who is passionate about cultural heritage has the chance to vote online for his or her favourite award winners and decide which one will be additionally recognised with the annual Public Choice Award. The result will be announced after the summer. The winners of the Grand Prix will also be made public on this occasion.
