Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport urged travellers to avoid the airport for several hours Saturday due to chaos at Europe's third busiest airport.

"The terminal is full" - Schiphol has asked travellers to avoid the airport. This was stated by airport authorities in a statement shortly before noon (1000 GMT).

Three hours later, the airport confirmed that passengers were still welcome but warned they would face lengthy waiting times as well as possible delays and cancellations.

Shortly, police closed highway exits to the airport on Saturday afternoon because of long lines at departure gates.

Schiphol spokeswoman said that the temporary closure was necessary in order to ensure safety and assist thousands of passengers frustrated by their delayed flights.

KLM's Dutch branch of Air France-KLM had on Saturday started a strike that was previously unannounced to demand better pay and working conditions.

KLM ground staff handle approximately half of all luggage that passes through Schiphol. It is Europe's third busiest airport, after London Heathrow and Paris Charles de Gaulle.

FNV, the labour union, stated that the walkout was over by noon.
