Macron hits below the belt on election campaign trail
As France's election campaign neared its conclusion, the president sparred on Thursday with a new partner. Macron was on the lookout for votes in Paris suburbs with strong left-wing votes. He dropped by a gym, pulled up his sleeves and made a few tentative jabs, as a boxing coach encouraged him to continue.
The sports coach encouraged, "Go on, go ahead, hit me,"
Macron replied, "I'm going for it," but his punches missed their target. His opponent dived and ducked out of his way.
Bystanders supported the president.
Macron was urged on by one man, "Right between your eyes."
Instead, the president smashed below the belt.
A poll revealed that Macron held his lead over Le Pen in the run-off vote on Sunday. The only debate between the final two candidates saw viewers deem Macron more prone to a bouts of high-handedness towards Le Pen, but they also considered him more convincing and suitable to be president.
