EU invests €608 million to train over 1,800 researchers

The European Commission has announced the results of the 2024 call for the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Doctoral Networks. A total of €608.6 million will fund 149 doctoral programmes across Europe, providing training and career development opportunities for over 1,800 doctoral candidates.
The selected programmes cover all scientific disciplines and will help researchers develop both academic and transferable skills. Among them, eight Industrial Doctorates will offer training in collaboration with businesses and public sector organizations, while eight Joint Doctorates will provide integrated training leading to joint or multiple degrees.
Startups, Research and Innovation Commissioner Ekaterina Zaharieva (pictured) said: “We have always been clear: in Europe, we need talents. They are at the foundation of our research and innovation ecosystem. We are committed to making Europe attractive to researchers by improving working and employment conditions and career prospects.”
The MSCA Doctoral Networks are part of the Horizon Europe programme. The next call for applications is planned to open on 28 May 2025. More information is available on the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions website. To further promote Europe as an attractive destination for excellent researchers and boost EU's competitiveness, this year the Commission will pilot the MSCA ‘Choose Europe' action with a budget of €22.5m. It will notably focus on tackling precarity in early research careers.
