Commissioner Sinkevičius on official visit to Greece to discuss the European Green Deal and visit burnt areas
Commissioner Sinkevičius is on official visit to Greece today (11 November) and 12 November where he will meet Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis; Minister of Rural Development and Food, Spilios Livanos; Minister of Environment, Konstantinos Skrekas; Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Christos Stylianides; and the Mayor of Athens, Kostas Bakoyannis.He will also deliver a speech at the joint Parliamentary session of the EU Affairs and Protection of the Environment Committeeson the implementation of the European Green Deal. Commissioner Sinkevičius will visit areas in Varybobi that burnt in the wildfires this summer and in Parnitha mountain that burnt in 2007, to look at the progress of projects for the protection and restoration of the natural environment, largely financed by the Recovery and Resilience Fund.
Main topics of discussion during the visit will include the protection of biodiversity and implementation of the recent Forest Strategy, especially in the context of burnt areas and reforestation, as well as sustainability of marine ecosystems and preservation of marine biodiversity in the Mediterranean Sea region.
