State aid: Commission approves €258.7 million Polish aid measure to support the Museum of Polish History in Warsaw

The European Commission has approved, under EU state aid rules, a Polish aid measure to finance the design and the construction of the new headquarters of the Museum of Polish History in Warsaw. The aid will also support the establishment of the permanent exhibition of the museum inside the new headquarters. The construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

The support will take the form of a direct grant of up to approximately €258.7 million (PLN 1.2 billion), which is equal to the total estimated costs for the implementation of the project.

The Commission assessed the measure under Article 107(3)(d) of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, which enables member states to grant state aid to promote culture and heritage conservation, subject to certain conditions. The Commission found that the Polish measure is necessary and appropriate to attain its genuine cultural objective. Furthermore, the Commission found that the aid will be proportionate, i.e. limited to the minimum necessary, and will have limited impact on competition and trade in the EU. On this basis, the Commission approved the measure under EU state aid rules.

The non-confidential version of the decision will be made available under case number SA.63894 in the state aid register on the Commission's competition website once any confidentiality issues have been resolved.
