Commissioners Reynders and Johansson to attend the Justice and Home Affairs Council on 4 and 5 December

Today (4 December) and tomorrow (5 December), Justice Commissioner Didier Reynders (pictured) and Home Affairs Commissioner Ylva Johansson will attend the Justice and Home Affairs Council, which will take place in Brussels.

Today, Commissioner Reynders will participate in the meeting of Justice Ministers, where the focus will be set on reaching a general approach on a new EU law on the transfer of proceedings in criminal matters, approve the Council position on the application of the GDPR, and adopt the European e-Justice Strategy 2024-2028. Ministers will discuss the proposed revision of the Directive on victims' rights and exchange their views on the ongoing fight against impunity in the context of Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine, EU's accession to the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms (ECHR) and the functioning of the European Public Prosecutor's Office.

Commissioner Reynders will provide an update on the EU-US negotiations on access to electronic evidence, and on the annual report on the application of the Charter of Fundamental Rights. Ministers will also take stock of the two recent Ministerial meetings on Justice and Home Affairs with their US and Western Balkans counterparts. Lastly, the Spanish Council Presidency will also update the ministers on the appointment of the Director for the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA). The press conference with Commissioner Reynders and the Minister for Justice of Spain, Félix Bolaños, will take place at +/- 18:15 (CEST) and can be followed online on EbS.

On Tuesday, Commissioner Johansson will participate in the meeting of Home Affairs Ministers, together with ministers of Schengen Associated countries. In the morning, participants will discuss the overall state of the Schengen area with a focus on effectiveness of return systems, as well as the situation at the EU external border in Finland. In the afternoon, the ministers will exchange views on the consequences and implications of Russia's aggression against Ukraine and of the situation in the Middle East for the EU's internal security. They will also discuss progress on the New Pact on Migration and Asylum, as well as the external dimension of migration. The ministers will also discuss progress on the Council Recommendation on a Blueprint regarding critical infrastructure.

The press conference with Commissioner Johansson and the Minister for Home Affairs of Spain, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, will take place at +/- 17.00 (CEST) and can be followed online on EbS.
