hk-protest-sep-2014The Republic of China  (Taiwan) Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) released the following statement on 30 September regarding ongoing Hong Kong demonstrations calling for universal suffrage.

With regard to the recent protests by the Hong Kong people demanding universal suffrage, the Mainland Affairs Council issues the following statement:

I.      The ROC government has long supported freedom, democracy, prosperity, and stability in Hong Kong. It also respects the way Hong Kong has been governed since the handover to mainland China in accordance with the Hong Kong Basic Law, and looks forward to the implementation of universal suffrage for the election of Chief Executive as stipulated in the same law.

II.     The Hong Kong people have held high expectations for the implementation of universal suffrage, and have regarded this issue as a benchmark in determining whether mainland China has fulfilled its commitments based on the concept of “one country, two systems.” As freedom and democracy are in line with developments in today’s world and will benefit the future stability and prosperity of Hong Kong, the ROC government expresses its sincere concern and support for the Hong Kong people’s pursuit of democracy.

III.    We hope that the mainland Chinese authorities and the Hong Kong government will carefully listen to the Hong Kong people’s demands, and seek consensus through peaceful and rational consultations with the people. We also expect that basic human rights of the Hong Kong people, including the freedom of assembly and freedom of speech, will be safeguarded, so as to promote continued democratic development. This will not only ensure the long-term stability of Hong Kong, but also have profound significance for the future of cross-strait relations and the development of democracy and the rule of law in ethnic Chinese communities.

IV.     The MAC will continue to monitor the situation in Hong Kong and has instructed its Bureau of Hong Kong Affairs to pay close attention to developments and come up with relevant contingency plans, so as to protect the rights and safety of ROC nationals in Hong Kong.
