BCCB_EP1_S-075UK MPs have voted in a symbolic poll to recognize the state of Palestine with 274 voting for the motion and 12 against.

The non-binding motion, which took place after a five-hour debate, was brought forward by a Labour MP who told his colleagues that recognizing Palestine as a state would be a "symbolically important" step towards peace.

Currently there are moves across Europe to recognize Palestinian statehood officially, and in 2012 the UN General Assembly voted to promote the Palestinians' status to that of "non-member observer state". The UK abstained from the UN vote.

Conservative MEP and Legal Affairs Spokesman in Europe, Dr Sajjad Karim (pictured), has been a vocal campaigner on international human rights and is set to host a high-level conference on the Gaza conflict in the European Parliament this week. He said: "The conflict in the Middle East will continue unabated unless positive steps are taken on both sides to reach a peaceful resolution. Today's vote is a step forward in recognising that a two-state solution is the best way to achieve peace."
