Belgium-Taiwan Friendship Group in Belgian Parliament supports South China Sea Peace Initiative
The Belgium-Taiwan Friendship Group in Belgian Parliament hosted a reception in the Chamber of the Deputies on 18 June.
The Group warmly welcomed ROC President Ma Ying-jeou’s recent South China Sea Peace Initiative, acknowledging it could help restore peace and order in the troubled region. Co-Presidents Peter Luykx, Alain Destexhe and Georges Dallemagne voiced their support for the Initiative, adding that their Group hopes it will follow the example of the similar Initiative for the East China Sea, so as to resolve disputes peacefully.
MP Destexhe noted that stability in the South China Sea is not only beneficial to the region, it is also important to the world. All sovereignty claims should be made in accordance with international law, and sovereignty disputes should be resolved through peaceful means.
Representative Kuoyu Tung of the Taipei Representative Office in the EU and Belgium thanked the group for its friendship and support. According to Representative Tung, bilateral relations will continue to prosper, since both countries share the same interests and values when it comes to trade and human rights. Furthermore, Taiwan’s role as an international peace-maker will help strengthen the foundations of Belgium-Taiwan relations.
