Parliament1The Socialists and Democrats Group in the European Parliament will continue to undertake intensive contacts with Moldova's political parties, following the break-up of the country's coalition.

The S&D Group's priorities remain the upholding of democratic principles and defending the country's pro-European orientation, describing the current political situation as a 'last chance' for the country's politicians.

A new administration must uphold the country's responsibilities under the Association Agreement with the European Union, implementing effectively the reforms needed, S&D MEP and chair of the Parliamentary Association Committee with Moldova, Andi Cristea MEP said in a parliamentary debate last night (25 November).

The S&D Group has held continuing contacts with its Moldovan sister party, the Democratic Party (PDM), having previously held discussions with party president Marian Lupu at the European Parliament in Strasbourg and speaker Andrian Candu at the European Parliament in Brussels.

The S&D Group is calling for full respect for the rule of law, an independent and efficient judiciary, a bold fight against corruption, a thorough investigation into the banking fraud bringing to justice those responsible.

S&D MEP Andi Cristea said: "This is the last chance for the outgoing governing coalition. The deadline has passed. And there is no alternative to continuing along the path of the current reform agenda. We can see it, Moldovan citizens can feel it, it's time for political leaders to hear it.

"Moldovan citizens deserve better, they deserve our engagement, our encouragement. And we will be by their side, more than ever before. A new executive confirming the ambitions of the Association Agreement, implementing effectively the reforms needed, could finally deliver. Moldova needs an act of responsibility on the part of the political leaders; Moldova needs transparent institutions; put quite simply, Moldova needs a political class which is able to restore citizens' trust."

Richard Howitt MEP, S&D's foreign affairs co-ordinator, added: "The Socialist and Democrat Group will always stand in principle against corruption, selective justice or any threat to democratic principles in all countries, and insists that the allegations in relation to Moldova's politicians should be subject to independent and impartial investigation in the country's justice system.

"Nevertheless, a European future for Moldova provides the country with the best long-term prospect to support democratic development and the rule of law, and our Group will continue to undertake intensive contacts with parties to support a pro-European orientation for the country."
