The world embraces the wave of development of smart cities in an era where new technologies, such as 5G, artificial intelligence and big data, are set to revolutionize industries and people’s daily life. Building smarter cities for their citizens has stayed one of the priorities for numerous national and local governments in the world. From a business perspective, smart cities will be a giant earner in the years to come. By 2023, the global market of smart cities is reportedly expected to reach $717.2 billion, that is some €634bn or 4.8 trillion yuan.

Both Italy and China set ambitious goals for smart city development and have so far made tremendous efforts. As a result, many of their cities climb in global smartness rankings. Rome was not built in a day, so are smart cities. While addressing some common challenges of developing smart mobility, health, governance or living environment, Italy and China have much to share, exchange and cooperate.

We believe that smart cities will be one of the most promising areas for Italy and China to jointly work on, not least, as the bilateral ties are boosting. The exclusive high-level event, schedule on 22 March in Rome, will take place on the sidelines of Chinese leader’s state visit to Italy, aiming to contribute to more successful Italy-China co-operation.

The event will bring together high-level policymakers with representatives from Italian and Chinese cities and industries to showcase their best practices, as well as the businesses that are designing or are already providing smart city applications and solutions.
