Germany's Social Democrats lead in exit poll in Lower Saxony state vote
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and his Social Democrats (SPD) appeared to be in line to win a region election in Lower Saxony on Sunday (9 October). This would give the leader a boost as he navigates the country through a series of crises.
A poll conducted by ZDF, the state broadcaster, found that the SPD received 32.5% of votes to the conservatives of former Chancellor Angela Angela Merkel's 27.5%.
The pro-business FDP parties and the environmental Greens scored 14.5% and 5.5%, respectively.
