Lavrov cancels flight to Serbia after countries close airspace, Interfax reports

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov (pictured) has cancelled his visit to Serbia after Serbian countries closed their airspace for him, a senior source in foreign ministry told Interfax on Sunday (5 June).

According to a source, a Serbian media report said that Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Bulgaria had shut down their airspace for the plane carrying Moscow's top diplomat to Belgrade Monday.

The Russian foreign ministry did not immediately respond.

Serbia, which shares close cultural ties to Russia, has refused to join western sanctions against Moscow and has not taken sides in Russia's invasion Ukraine.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Aleksandar Vucic, his Serbian counterpart, agreed last month that Russia would continue to supply natural gas to Serbia. Other countries have been cut off because they refused to pay Russian gas in ruble
