Spain is likely to lift the requirement for people to wear masks when they travel on public transport in order to stop the spread of COVID-19. This was announced by Health Minister Carolina Darias.

She said that the country's epidemiological situation was stable, and health emergency services had suggested lifting the restriction. In health facilities, masks will be mandatory.

She told reporters: "I will bring the proposal to abolish the obligation to wear masks on public transport to the cabinet meeting to take place on 7 February."

Three years after the first COVID-19 cases were discovered in Europe, masks have been made optional on some public transport in Spain, Germany and Austria.

In May 2020, it became mandatory for all passengers to wear a mask on public transport.

Germany will lift the rule that applies to long-distance buses and trains on 2 February. The obligation to Greece will expire on 30 January.
