President Tsai kicks off 2021 Open Parliament Forum President
Tsai Ing-wen (pictured) delivered the opening remarks at the launch of the 2021 Open Parliament Forum in Taipei City on 2 December, reaffirming the government’s commitment to expanding resilient partnerships with members of the democratic world. The two-day forum, which was organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), the Legislative Yuan, the Taiwan-Asia Exchange Foundation and the National Democratic Institute, featured the participation of 100 experts and lawmakers from countries all over the world. During her speech, President Tsai emphasised Taiwan’s pursuit of open government and open parliament, noting the joint efforts of the government, parliament, and civil society groups towards the goal.
Describing Taiwan as being situated on the front lines of democracy, she further expressed the country’s willingness to work with like-minded partners to safeguard the values of freedom and democracy. Alongside the event’s notable in-person attendees, the forum also featured messages from a number of high-profile international figures, including former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe; Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi; and speaker of the UK House of Commons Sir Lindsay Hoyle.
