Ukraine completes questionnaire for EU membership

Ukraine completed a questionnaire that will be used by the European Union as a starting point to decide whether Kyiv should become a member, Ihor Zhovkva said, deputy head of President Volodymyr Zilenskiy’s office.

Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, handed the questionnaire to Zelenskiy on April 8th. She promised a faster start for Ukraine's bid to join the EU after Russia's invasion.

Zhovkva stated to the Ukrainian public broadcaster on Sunday night, "Today I can tell that the Ukrainian side has completed the document."

He said that the European Commission would need to make a recommendation about Ukraine's compliance of the required membership criteria.

"We expect that the recommendation... will be positive and then the ball is on the side EU member states."

Zhovkva stated that Ukraine will be granted the status of candidate country for EU membership in June at a scheduled meeting.

According to the Council's website schedule, the European Council will meet June 23-24th.

"Next, we'll need to begin accession negotiations. Zhovkva stated that once those talks are over, we will be able to talk about Ukraine's full membership of the EU.
