Turkey expects 'clear picture' on war in Ukraine by spring

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Friday that he expected a "clear picture of the war in Ukraine" by spring. As shelling and clashes continued, the Kremlin indicated that Russian President Vladimir Putin was open for negotiations.

"Now Ukraine is moving on the ground and retaking some of their occupied territory. Russia is retaliating by deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure. So life is becoming difficult for Ukrainians especially, and for us all," Cavusoglu said at a forum held in Rome.

"I believe that before spring we will have a clear picture of ceasefire, truce or negotiation table. We will not quit." Cavusoglu said that Turkey will continue its efforts.

Cavusoglu said that Russia's war on Ukraine has become more complex as the fighting on the ground becomes heavier. He also said that Western countries need to do more to bring both sides to the table.

The Kremlin said that Putin was open to negotiations on Ukraine, but the West must accept Moscow’s demands. This was a day after Joe Biden, the US president, said he would be willing to talk to Putin if he were seeking a way out of the conflict.

As Ukraine reels from Russian missile attacks and drone strikes on key energy infrastructures, which have left millions without heat, electricity, or water, it has been nine months since the fighting ended. With winter now in its grip, Western countries are trying boost aid to Ukraine.

Fighting is raging across eastern Ukraine, with Russian forces in Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions remaining on the defensive.
