On Sunday (18 December), a senior official in eastern Ukraine stated that Ukrainian forces attacked a hotel in which members of Russia's private Wagner military organization were based. Many of them were killed.

Serhiy Gaidai, the governor of the Russian-occupied Luhansk Region, was interviewed by Ukrainian television, and said that forces launched a strike on Saturday (17 December) on a Kadiivka hotel, west of Luhansk's main centre. Telegram channels posted photos showing a building that was largely destroyed.

"They had a little bit of a pop there, right where Wagner headquarters was. A large number of those who were there perished."

Russia's defence ministry was unavailable for comment immediately.

Gaidai didn't give any casualty numbers, but he stated that those who survived were not provided with adequate medical care.

He said: "I'm sure at least half of those who survived will die before they receive medical care. They have even stolen equipment in our Luhansk area."

Local officials were quoted by some Ukrainian media as saying that the hotel was closed for some time.

The Wagner Group is a private military contractor that has close ties with the Kremlin. Its forces are well-known to be operating in Ukraine, and have been deployed in many African countries.

Gaidai previously reported that Ukrainian forces struck other targets in Luhansk, including a Wagner headquarters in Popasna in August.
