EU promotes regional co-operation in New York

On 25 September, among the main highlights of the day in New York, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen (pictured) delivered a speech during the second meeting of the Ukraine Compact. High Representative Josep Borrell delivered a speech on behalf the EU at the G20 Foreign Ministers' meeting. He also addressed the UN Security Council during its emergency meeting on Lebanon. High Representative Borrell and Commissioner Janez Lenarčič co-hosted two events on Sudan, calling for an immediate and sustainable ceasefire, a robust humanitarian response as well as the establishment of monitoring mechanisms urging respect of International Humanitarian Law. Commissioner Stella Kyriakides spoke at a side event on fostering cross-country solidarity to address Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). She also attended the First Ladies Luncheon Roundtable at the 2024 Concordia Annual Summit and participated in a fireside chat on ‘The Power of Prevention: Universal Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Vaccination Strategies' at the Foreign Policy Health Forum.

Commissioner Ylva Johansson delivered an address during the roundtable on safe pathways organised by Pathways International. Commissioner Lenarčič co-chaired together with Belgium a High-level event on the importance of restoring International Humanitarian Law's centrality and universality. Read Commissioner Lenarčič's speech here. Kadri Simson spoke at the Ministerial Consultation Meeting on the Plastic Pollution Treaty with Canada and Norway. Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra delivered a speech at the UN High-level plenary meeting on ‘Addressing the existential threats posed by sea-level rise'. He also participated in a roundtable discussion hosted by Bloomberg on ‘Europe's Net Zero Strategy – Delivering on Climate Ambition and Enhancing Industrial Competitiveness,' and in a high-level panel on ‘Global Solidarity Levies and Financing for Development.'

High Representative/Vice President Borrell participated in the informal Ministerial meeting on Venezuela, organized by the US, on 26 September. He then co-chaired an informal Ministerial meeting of EU and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) Foreign Ministers. You can watch the opening remarks on EbS.
