NATO in talks to build naval base in Albania, prime minister says
During the NATO summit at NATO headquarters in Brussels, Belgium on June 14, 2021, Edi Rama, Albania's Prime Minister, poses with Jens Stoltenberg, NATO Secretary General.
Rama stated at a press conference that Porto Romano (located near Durres on the coast) would have both a commercial section and a military naval base.
He stated that the NATO and Albania would co-finance the construction of the military base.
Rama said: "We will soon return to Brussels to continue discussions regarding our proposal...for installation of a NATO Naval Base in the new port at Durres."
Rama stated that his government offered NATO the Pashaliman naval station, which is located 200km (124 miles) south Tirana. Moscow established Pashaliman in 1950 to house 12 submarines close to Vlore. This is where the Adriatic Sea and Ionian Seas meet. NATO is currently constructing Kucova Air Base in Tirana, approximately 80 km (50 mi) away. This base will be used for NATO's purposes. Albania was made a NATO member in 2009.
