French 'Beyond Black' painter Pierre Soulages dies at 102
Pierre Soulages has died at the age of 102. The museum in Rodez, his southwestern home, commemorated his life and work on Wednesday (26 October). Benoit Decron, museum head, said Soulages had died Tuesday (25 October) evening at the hospital. He was a black artist who had worked exclusively with black since 1979.
He was born on Christmas Eve 1919 and also designed the 104 stained-glass windows that grace Conques Abbey in southwest France.
Colette Soulages, who is 101, is his widow.
