Emily O’Reilly re-elected as European Ombudsman

Screen-Shot-2014-07-28-at-12.39.05The European Parliament re-elected the current European Ombudsman, Emily O’Reilly (pictured), for the 2014-2019 term this Tuesday (16 December). She was backed by 569 MEPs in a secret ballot. O’Reilly, who is Irish, was first elected European Ombudsman on 3 July 2013, after her predecessor retired. In today's ballot she was the only candidate.

569 members voted in favour, 66 against and 43 abstained.

The task of the Ombudsman is to investigate complaints about maladministration by EU institutions and bodies. Complaints can be submitted by anyone who lives in the EU or is an official citizen, as well as companies and associations with an office in the EU.
