#Turkey: EP asks Ankara to release all journalists jailed without evidence
MEPs today debated the situation of journalists in Turkey, following the failed military take-over. MEPs made it clear they believe that the failed coup cannot be used as an excuse for the Turkish Government to further stifle legitimate and peaceful opposition and to silence media through disproportionate and illegal actions and measures.
ALDE MEP Alexander Lambsdorff (FDP, Germany) Vice-President of the European Parliament for Human Rights and Democracy, and ALDE shadow rapporteur on Turkey, said: “The rule of law, press freedom and freedom of expression are core values. Therefore, we call on the Turkish authorities to release all journalists detained on the basis of unsubstantiated charges. The failed military take-over cannot be used as an excuse for the Turkish government to prevent journalists and the media from exercising their right to freedom of expression.”
Ahead of the parliamentary debate, Alexander Lambsdorff organised a press conference together with Can Dündar, Turkish journalist, former Cumhuriyet editor-in-chief and Julie Majerczak from Reporters Without Borders, who gave an overview on the situation on the ground.
The EP plenary will vote tomorrow on a resolution calling also on Turkish government to narrow the scope of the emergency measures, so that they can no longer be used to curtail freedom of expression and to restore independence of media outlets.
