#CohesionPolicy - Portugal's important suburban train line modernized
The European Commission has approved €50 million of financing from the Cohesion Fund to modernize the 25 km-rail line between Lisbon and Cascais, a very important suburban line serving tens of thousands of commuters daily.
Works include installing new electrical infrastructure, signalling and control systems aiming at making train journeys safer and more energy efficient. Cohesion and Reforms Commissioner Elisa Ferreira (pictured) said: “The Lisbon-Cascais line is the second-busiest on the national railway network. By making it safer and more efficient, we aim at encouraging the shift from car to public transport for tens of thousands of people commuting to Lisbon every day and consequently reduce traffic congestion and pollution for a healthier, cleaner urban environment.”
Thanks to the modernization of the electrification system, energy consumption on the line should be cut by half once the project is finished, in 2023.
