EU helps deliver flood aid in Spain
Following Spain's activation of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism last weekend in response to devastating floods in the country, France and Portugal immediately mobilized waste management machinery and vehicles to support operations in the affected areas. Other European countries have also offered their assistance and the Commission is in constant contact with the Spanish authorities to deliver the additional assistance needed.
To strengthen co-ordination on the ground, the EU Emergency Response Coordination Centre (ERCC) has deployed a liaison officer to Spain. In addition, since 29 October, the ERCC has been supporting Spain with the Copernicus Rapid Mapping Service, producing 31 flood delineation and damage assessment maps.
Crisis Management Commissioner Janez Lenarčič (pictured) said: “We are determined to do everything in our power to help Spain. I would like to thank France and Portugal for their effective response to Spain's urgent call for help following these devastating floods. Their support for waste management and reconstruction efforts, together with offers of assistance from other member states, demonstrate the strong solidarity within the EU and ensure that Spain has the resources it needs to rebuild.”
