#Venezuela: EU must act urgently to support democratic reforms and economic revival
During the plenary debate held on 3 February evening by the European Parliament, in Strasbourg, on the situation in Venezuela, the ALDE Group called on the EU to be proactive and to show its support to the recently elected Parliament in getting the country on the right track. MEP José Inácio Faria (Partido da Terra, Portugal), ALDE Coordinator in the Delegation to the Euro-Latin American Parliamentary Assembly, said this is a crucial moment for Venezuela’s future:
“I was happy to have witnessed in Caracas, on 6 December ,a victory for democracy at the National Elections. Now, at this crucial and decisive moment for the future of Venezuela, I urge the European Union to send a strong and clear message of support to all Venezuelans. Only respect for the electoral results, the principle of separation of powers, the approval of the Law of Amnesty and National Reconciliation and the change of the political model that, for almost two decades, greatly contributed to the present humanitarian crisis and to the collapse of the economy, will allow the reinforcement of democracy and the rule of law!”
ALDE MEP, Dita Charanzová (ANO, Czech Republic), called on the government to act in the interest of Venezuelans and save the country from collapse:
“The government must stop rejecting the voice of its people by undermining the National Assembly. Venezuela needs urgent actions to solve its very serious economic and social problems. Confrontation must be replaced with reconciliation. A first step towards cooperation must be for the government to free all political prisoners.
The EU must play a greater role in helping to reverse the deteriorating situation in Venezuela. The High Representative should expand the mandate and the funding of existing instruments for Latin America to address the very serious crisis in Venezuela.”
ALDE MEP, Beatriz Becerra (UPyD, Spain), Vice President of DROI Committee, added:
“The world has already seen that the majority of Venezuelans want a peaceful and constructive change for their country by leaving behind the regime of Nicolás Maduro. The European Union has to take the lead in offering international support to the new Parliament to push forward for democratic reforms Venezuela needs. The European Parliament should immediately send an official delegation to show our true commitment to this cause.”
