Parliament1On Sunday 8 May in Strasbourg and on Saturday 28 May in Brussels, the European Parliament and other EU institutions will open their doors to the general public, a unique opportunity to discover the diversity of Europe in a fun and family-friendly atmosphere.

The events mark the anniversary of the Schuman Declaration of 9 May 1950, which is regarded as the key event in the creation of a united Europe. As well as commemorating this historic event, Europe Day is an opportunity to further promote transparency and encourage closer ties between the European Union and its citizens. The European institutions open their doors and give the citizens the chance to discover their daily work. The central theme of this 24th edition of the Open Days will be the European Union motto 'United in diversity'. Europe is a multi-faceted melting-pot of languages, cultures, religions and political opinions, and this diverse identity is reflected in its fundamental values and governing institutions.

Strasbourg 8 May: Official opening of the Open Day by European Parliament Vice President Rainer Wieland (9h30). At 11h a public debate will be held in the chamber with MEPs on the theme of “United in Diversity”. From 10h to 18h, visitors will be able to take a signposted tour explaining the European Parliament's role and powers (Louise Weiss building).

Brussels 28 May: At 11.00 there will be a debate with MEPs on Mahatma Ghandi's quote "Our ability to reach unity in diversity will be the beauty and the test of our civilisation." The Parlamentarium will host the photo exhibition "Displaced", with photographs of women refugees and asylum seekers (photographer Marie Dorigny). Visits to the plenary chamber, including a briefing about the role and the duties of the European Parliament, will be organised.
