SR_IMAGE_Ambassadors from adTo coincide with #Euro2016 and #WorldRefugeeDay (20 June), the European Commission is launching a month-long campaign to raise awareness of the EU’s life-saving support for refugees worldwide.

The #SupportRefugees campaign is fronted by Marouane Fellaini (Belgium and Manchester United) and female player Anja Mittag (Germany and Paris Saint-Germain).

It’s supported by UEFA and the International Federation of Professional Footballers (FIFPro).

The players – who have given their time freely to support the campaign – appear in a special video with two seven-year-old children, Nathan Isayas and Christallenia Solomon, who come from refugee families.

The footballers and children also took part in a photo-shoot, the results of which will be seen on social media and in newspapers across Europe during the month-long campaign.

Background

60 million men, women and children are currently displaced worldwide. They need help, protection and long-lasting solutions. The European Union gives more than €1 billion every year for humanitarian assistance to support those forced to flee their homes. This funding provides access to shelter, food, health care, sanitation, education and other essential services.

Marouane Fellaini, who was born in Brussels to Moroccan parents, said: “I’m very proud to back this campaign. For millions of fans, football is their life. For millions of refugees, life is about survival. I think it’s crucial that more people know about what Europe is doing. This funding saves lives. Our message is clear: Support refugees!”

Anja Mittag said: “We’re talking about people who have lost their homes and almost everything they have. They’re scared and, to them, it must seem as though the world doesn’t care. We want to show that Europe cares. Together with the EU, we are proud to support World Refugee Day and we’re urging the public to become supporters too.”

The Commission has a legal duty to inform the public about how and where EU humanitarian aid is spent. The amount of funding dedicated to the European #SupportRefugees campaign is less than 0.1% of this year’s humanitarian assistance budget.
