#RoyalBridges presented for first time in #Dubai
The inaugural edition of Royal Bridges—an art movement dedicated to the enrichment of global artistry—under the support of ArtBahrain, took place in Dubai from November 29-30, 2016, at the Ritz Carlton DIFC.
Royal Bridges featured a multi-dimensional exhibition titled Convergence – showcasing the diverse, individual histories and narratives intertwined with the background of each exhibitor. With a special viewing opportunity for the general public on 30 November from 10am-4pm, the visual exhibition offered insight into the unique personalities and styles of fifteen of the world’s sovereign artists, including HE Sheikh Dr Hassan bin Mohammed bin Ali Al Thani, HRH Princess Reem bint Al Waleed bin Talal Al Saud, HH Prince Rotislav Rotislavovich Romanov, HRH The Princess Sophie from Romania, HRH Princess Lelli de Orleans e Bragança of Brazil and HRH The Duchess Diane of Württemberg.
Convergence featured a diverse and robust selection of contemporary work from more traditional mediums of painting and sculpture to interpretive forms of expression including jewellery design and musical performances. All the works featured will be curated to include artists that are internationally recognized, encouraging the viewers’ understanding of modern-day royalty as creatives in their own right.
“Royal Bridges is a new initiative that links the Middle East with the world, as well as global artists of distinct backgrounds with new audiences for their work. Forging new bonds, encouraging emerging audiences and collectors, and building greater awareness and appreciation are all among the key aims of the Royal Bridges platform,” said HE Sheikh Rashid Al Khalifa bin Khalifa, Founder of Royal Bridges.
Following the public exhibition of Convergence, November 30 included a collaboration with the leading auction house, Christie’s. With under 250 years of auctioning expertise, including a decade in the Middle East, Christie’s enabled Royal Bridges to conduct an auction for all the exhibited pieces with proceeds benefitting the World Food Programme (WFP) charity. Funds raised were used for WFP’s refugee and other emergency food needs. In addition, atypical performances by UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage: the Burundi Drummers with head of mission HRH Princess Esther Kamatari of Burundi and the Cambodian Royal Ballet with director HRH Prince SISOWATH Tesso of Cambodia provided entertainment during the gala dinner/auction.
Royal Bridges was coined to act as a ‘bridge’ or platform for dialogue across different cultures, styles of art and relationships. It is a global, artistic movement that challenges the roles typically assigned to royalty. It is a movement that dares the public to view royalty as an artist and not just a patron of the arts. The annual event is founded by HE Shaikh Rashid bin Khalifa Al Khalifa in addition to Baron Henri Estramant and organized by ArtBahrain.
