European Commission invests in modern and fast internet access in #Greece

The European Commission has approved an ultrafast broadband project in Greece worth €223 million of EU funds, with over €196m from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and €27m from the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD). This investment will provide modern and fast internet access to users throughout the whole country, benefitting almost 11 million people.Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms, Elisa Ferreira, commented: “This is a clear example of the added value of Cohesion Policy, making sure no one is left behind. Thanks to this investment, Greek citizens – and especially those living in remote areas - will benefit from efficient, modern and ultrafast internet access.” The ultrafast broadband will also contribute to direct and indirect job and business creation. It will benefit consumers, giving them better access to e-commerce services; citizens, who will take advantage of e-Government facilities; and workers who will be able to telework, hence reducing time spent in transport and expenses such as office rent. The ultrafast broadband project will be operational as of May 2021.
