Justice Minister Tzipi Livni and Palestinian chief negotiator ErekatIsraeli Justice Minister Tzipi Livni pledged to “create solutions and make decisions for the future”, rather than alluding to the past, as she concluded the first round of renewed peace talks with Palestinian chief negotiator Saeb Erekat and US Secretary of State John Kerry in Washington Tuesday.

Following a tripartite meeting at the State Department, they held a joint press conference at which Kerry praised US President Barack Obama’s determination to resuscitate the dormant peace process.                                                                                                               Justice Minister Tzipi Livni and

Both sides will reconvene for “substantive” talks within two weeks in Jerusalem or the Palestinian territories.

Echoing the Secretary’s praise, Livni was full of appreciation for Obama’s “personal commitment to peace and to Israel’s security”.

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also came in for some degree of praise on account of his “courageous act of leadership”.

Conceding that the meeting on neutral territory was just the start of difficult compromises that would be required from both sides, she added: “We are hopeful, but we cannot be naive. We cannot afford it in our region. We owe it to our people to do everything, but everything we can for their security and for the hope of peace for future generations.”

Directly addressing her Palestinian counterpart Erekat, she said that whilst “we didn’t reach dead end in the past, we didn’t complete our mission”, as she called on him not to waste the opportunity presented by the US-backed renewed initiative, as she extolled a message of realistic optimism that “the negotiations that we have re-launched today will cause, I hope, a spark of hope, even if small, to emerge out of cynicism and pessimism that is so often heard”.

“It is our task to work together so that we can transform that spark of hope into something real and lasting,” she concluded.
