EU-Taiwan-Free-Trade-Agreement-680x365On 2 April, John Clancy, spokesman for Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht, told the Taiwan news agency CNA that progress could be achieved towards a bilateral Economic Cooperation Agreement (ECA) between Taiwan and the EU if both sides can find common ground.

Citing De Gucht, Clancy said an investment agreement covering bilateral market access could be worth exploring in due course, but the Commission must give priority to economic and trade developments within Europe before such discussions could take place.

"We have to focus on our current trade agenda first," De Gucht said last October in response to a resolution adopted by the European Parliament. "The time will come later on to assess possible ways to improve our trade relations with Taiwan, provided that a shared level of ambition can be found." The Commission will continue to push for trade agreements with Asian countries, De Gucht added.
