Daniel Dalton MEP has backed the launch of free trade negotiations between the EU and Australia and New Zealand in a vote in the European Parliament. He gave strong backing to the commencement of negotiations as soon as possible on "deep and comprehensive" free trade deals with the two Commonwealth countries.
Speaking after the vote, Dalton expressed his optimism that free trade talks could be concluded swiftly."I want to see ambitious, wide ranging and modern agreements, taking into account 21st Century issues such as digital trade, concluded as soon as possible, and I am hopeful that the common values and commitment to free trade we share with Australia and New Zealand will help talks proceed quickly." he said."Given the deep historical, cultural and social ties with the UK, and their membership of the Commonwealth, they are very welcome partners.""Concluding comprehensive agreements with countries such as New Zealand and Australia with whom we already share strong services sector ties is particularly beneficial to the UK, as a services superpower."
