#Agriculture: MEPs give support for report on enhanced innovation in agriculture
Overcoming its political divisions, The AGRI Committee in the European Parliament today gave its strong support for more innovation in agriculture, adopting by a large majority Jan Huitema’s report on enhancing innovation in agriculture.
The text outlines very concrete measures to develop a more sustainable and competitive European agricultural sector. It calls for flexible rules focusing on farmer's needs and leaving room for entrepreneurship. By singling out the most topical issues such as precision farming, climate smart farming and making better use of the power of nature by, for example, combating plant diseases with insects, the report shows how we can produce more and better while lowering our impact on the environment. .
Following the vote, ALDE Rapporteur Jan Huitema said: “Agriculture is one of the most innovative economic sectors, although not often seen as such. In my report I want to show what agriculture is capable of. The latest innovations can have huge impact, our policies are still quite often out-dated and this hampers progress and discourages farmers in their pursuit of better production models. The text sums up a list of very concrete proposals in order to remove regulatory obstacles for farmers today, and provide some outlines for a truly competitive European agricultural policy of tomorrow.”
