Paris taxi driver files lawsuit against Tesla after fatal crash
One person was killed when a Paris taxi driver crashed his Tesla Model 3 in December. His lawyer stated on Sunday that he had filed a complaint against the U.S. automaker.
In the days following the accident, the French government stated that Tesla (TSLA.O) had informed it that there was no immediate evidence of a technical fault.
Sarah Saldmann stated that her client had filed a criminal complaint in Versailles with the public prosecutors alleging that Tesla "put lives in danger".
Witnesses said that the Tesla, driven by an off-duty taxi driver, drove through metal posts, a row pay-to-ride bikes, and a glass recycling bin before coming to a stop.
Unnamed taxi driver told police that the car had been accelerating on its own after the accident and that he couldn't activate the brakes.
Saldmann refused to answer questions about whether the complaint was made on the basis still-unpublished preliminary conclusions of investigators.
The accident occurred in the 13th district of Paris, a street that is lined with shops, restaurants, and bars. It resulted in three deaths and 17 injuries.
Although the taxi driver is currently under investigation for manslaughter, he has not been arrested. After the accident, he failed an alcohol test.
The Versailles public prosecutor will decide if Tesla has a case.
Tesla gathers detailed data from its sensors and cameras and uses this data to challenge claims of malfunctioning technology causing accidents.
