MOFA announces $200 million Lithuania investment fund
Deputy Foreign Minister Harry Ho-jen Tseng (pictured) has announced that Taiwan will continue to deepen its friendship and expand exchanges with Lithuania in an online news conference, January 5, which also featured the announcement of the imminent creation of a US$200 million fund to invest in Lithuanian industries. Tseng described Taiwan and Lithuania as being on the front line of China’s ongoing campaign of economic and political coercion, and emphasised the great importance placed on the bilateral relationship with Lithuania by all segments of Taiwanese society.
The slated investment fund will be financed by Taiwan’s National Development Council (NDC) to support strategically important industries in both countries, such as semiconductors, biotech, and lasers. Relations between both Lithuania and Taiwan have continued to deepen in recent months, despite China’s intense campaign of political and economic coercion. Lithuania has been supported by many senior EU figures, including Presidents of the European Council and Commission Charles Michel and Ursula von der Leyen, as well as Chair of the European People’s Party Manfred Weber, all of whom expressed solidarity with the Baltic state, on 17 December, 4 January and 31 December, respectively.
