Commission approves two new Geographical Indications from Latvia and the United Kingdom

The Commission has registered ‘Aglonas maizes veistūklis’ (pictured) from Latvia as Protected Geographical Indications (PGI). ‘Aglonas maizes veistūklis’ is a rye bread with pieces of dried pork fat and onions baked into it. The method used to produce the bread and the recipe have been preserved and have not changed since the end of the 19th century. It still has to be prepared by hand, starting with the preparation of the flour, the kneading of the rye dough, the shaping of ‘Aglonas maizes veistūklis’, the filling of the dough and the baking of the bread. The reputation of ‘Aglonas maizes veistūklis’ stems mainly from the tradition, passed down within families from generation to generation, of baking the bread in brick ovens.
The Commission also registered ‘Sussex‘ wine from the United Kingdom as Protected Designation of Origin (PDO). ‘Sussex’ wine are still and sparkling wine made from grapes grown in the counties of East and West Sussex. The particular terroir of Sussex produces a wide selection of light still wines, as well as crisp dry whites, fruity red wines and elegant rosé wines. The particular terroir of Sussex makes it an ideal region to produce grapes of outstanding quality for still and sparkling wines.
The new denomination will be added to the list of 3,644 agricultural products already in the Union register for agricultural geographical indications. The list of all registered geographical indications can be found in the eAmbrosia database. More information is available online at Quality Schemes.
