Spanish prosecutor asks for eight-year jail term for Shakira

A Spanish prosecution is seeking a sentence of eight years for Shakira, the Colombian singer, over a €14.5million tax fraud case.

The singer, who sold over 80 million records around the world with hits like Hips Don’t Lie, rejected an offer of settlement from the prosecutor to close the case earlier this week.

She was accused of not paying taxes between 2012-2014, a time Shakira claims she didn't live in Spain.

If she is found guilty, it asked for a sentence of eight years in prison and a fine exceeding 23 million euros ($23.5million). There is no date yet for her trial.

When Shakira was asked for comment, her representatives pointed to a statement she sent on Wednesday that stated she "is completely confident of her innocence" as well as her belief that the case is a violation of her rights.

The terms of the settlement offer previously made have not been disclosed.

The 45-year old singer, who is also known as the Queen of Latin Pop, claimed she paid 17.2 million euros to the Spanish tax office at first. She claims that she does not owe any tax authorities.

This latest development in the tax matter comes one month after Shakira and Gerard Pique, FC Barcelona defender, announced their separation. Shakira, 45, is married to Pique, 35. They have two children.
