President Tsai Ing-wen expressed hope that Taiwan and the European Union can accelerate progress toward a bilateral investment agreement, on 20 July, as she met European Parliament Vice President Nicola Beer (pictured).

Tsai’s remarks came as she welcomed Beer at the Presidential Office in Taipei. The European lawmaker was in Taiwan on a three-day visit aimed at deepening, consolidating and diversifying mutual relations. Responding to Tsai’s welcome, Beer expressed Europe’s deep and serious concern over China’s actions which could unilaterally change the status quo and stated unequivocally that only the Taiwanese people can decide Taiwan’s future.

In addition to Tsai, Beer met other officials including Premier Su Tseng-chang, Legislative Yuan Vice President Tsai Chi-chang, and Digital Minister Audrey Tang. She also attended a banquet hosted by Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu, during which the minister thanked Beer for her long-term support for Taiwan’s freedom and democracy. The Taipei Representative Office in the EU and Belgium also welcomed the delegation’s visit, describing it as marking a significant milestone in the relations between Taiwan and the European Parliament.
