Legislative speaker You leads delegation to Czech Republic and Lithuania
Taiwan’s legislative speaker You Si-kun arrived in the Czech Republic, on 18 July, leading a cross-party delegation of lawmakers on a four-day visit to the country, before embarking on a three-day visit to Lithuania, July 21. Describing the Czech Republic as a Mecca of democracy movements, You met a number of senior officials while in the country, including the presidents of the upper and lower houses of the Czech parliament, Miloš Vystrčil and Markéta Pekarová Adamová. You’s visit, which came at the invitation of Vystrčil, comes almost two years after the Czech Senate President’s own historic trip to Taiwan, during which he became the first head of a lawmaking body from a non-diplomatic ally of Taiwan to address the Legislative Yuan. The four-member Taiwanese delegation was subsequently received by the speaker of the Lithuanian parliament (the Seimas) Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen, upon arrival in Lithuania. During their time in the Baltic state, the group will meet lawmakers, as well as visit venues commemorating Lithuania’s democratic development.
